SUB.Culture Detroit: Movement Festival (Episode 1)

Paxahau, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig, and more chime in to tell the breathtaking story of one of techno's most pivotal events.

Mainstream media always makes it seem like only bad things come from Detroit: urban decay, crime, bankruptcy, D12. But as any electronic music fan knows, Detroit is also a hotbed of creativity, passion, and promise. From the 1980s—when fellows like Juan Atkins and Derrick May ingested New Wave and Kraftwerk and spit out a template for what we know today as techno—to the present day, with new blood producers like Kyle Hall, Mark Flash, and Monty Luke creating forward-thinking tracks, Detroit continues to be a source of inspiration and power in the worldwide dance arena. In our SUB.Culture: Detroit series, we look at Motor City past, present, and future.

In the first of four videos in our SUB.Culture: Detroit series, we profile the annual Movement Festival, which happens in Downtown Detroit's Hart Plaza each Memorial Day weekend. Created by Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, and Carl Craig in 2000 and run by Paxahau since 2006, the festival is a shining star of the American festival season. Movement celebrates Motor City's legacy with a real Midwestern vibe of friendliness and keeping it real. This video tells the story of how Movement came to be through first-person accounts, footage of the 2013 festival, and some extremely moving quotes from the likes of Kevin Saunderson and Mike Huckaby, all paired with breathtaking festival footage.
