Shlomi Aber's Timeline of Techno Goes from Kraftwerk to Ben Klock

Get learned on the Tel Aviv techno whiz's most influential tunes.

Israeli producer and DJ Shlomi Aber has been in the game since 1990. That's 25 years of techno experience. In that time, Aber has accrued a CV that includes work on Cocoon, Desolat, Cadenza, Obum, R&S and Objectivity.

Based in Barcelona nowadays, the Be As One boss just wrapped up another season in Ibiza, but not before putting together a 40-year timeline of tracks that influenced him and defined techno in the process. Check it out, maybe you'll learn something before heading out to blow all those brain cells (to techno, presumably).

Kraftwerk - "Radioactivity" - 1975

Everything we call "techno" these days wouldn't be here without Kraftwerk, the first act that really took darker machine activities right into the mainstream. The Detroit scene is more recognisable as the pioneer of techno, but it's the german act Kraftwerk who influenced the genre.

Rhythim Is Rhythim - "Strings of Life" - 1987

Derrick May has so many reasons to top this all time favorites list. The first time I really understood what this guy is all about is when he came up with this all-time classic. He combined 4/4 techno with orchestral keys, and created one of the most influential tracks of all time.

Cyrus - "Enforcement" - 1993

I remember listening to this record for the first time. I can't say it was innovative, but still it has a special touch. it influenced me a lot personally at the time. I remember trying to mix other records into this one in my bedroom. I built most of my records of that time around that one!

A Scorpion's Dream - "Graphics" - 1994

This one from steve rachmad AKA scorpions dream, I discovered only 7-8 years after its original release, but it has been my all time favorite techno tracks since the first listen. This one never received the

proper recognition, but I will easy rate it on my top 10 classic techno records .

Maurizio - "Untitled ( M5 - A1 )" - 1995

By now, everyone knows what basic channel is all about. I always saw that record as the ultimate dub techno track. Even 'til now, nothing has topped it in the genre, except maybe another basic channel record, probably "Octagon." They took the Jeff Mills sound of those days and recreated it to a new genre.

Jeff Mills - "The Bells" - 1996

I have so many amazing memories from this one. I've played it so many times in my career, maybe because i worked so hard to get a vinyl copy. I had it on tape, way before the vinyl, and i remember calling every record shop in London from my parents old house in israel trying to figure out how to get my vinyl copy. After 6-7 calls, I finally found it at a shop back in UK, but they didn't do any international shipments. I had to fly out, 17 years old, just to get this record. Those days were something special, with so much great music, especially from Model 500 and the Detroit guys.

Laurent Garnier - "Crispy Bacon" - 1997

What a ride this one is, definitely one of my favorites. That was about the time I started to play out regularly in clubs and this one was on top of the bag for long time.

Josh Wink & Lil Louis - "How Is Your Evening So Far?" - 2000

When i first heard this record, it hit me in a way only few records ever did. It has been my favorite for years and years. I remember the "Loveprade" 2000 in Tel Aviv. This record has been played in front of 500,000 people at least 5 times by several different DJs on the same stage. No one wanted to let the opportunity to play it out in front of that massive crowd go. That was the year that techno really crossed the lines and become very popular throughout the world.

Oxia - "Troisieme" - 2002

This is an unforgettable lights up track from Oxia…The sunrise is on!

Renato Cohen ‎- "Pontapé" - 2003

This is from about the same period of new age techno as Oxia. This was my favorite track of that year…full on techno

Ben Klock - "Subzero" - 2010

one of my favorite tracks of the past few years. It captures the real soul of the new age techno/German revolution.

Borrowed Identity - "Painted Clouds XIII" - 2013

I couldn't finish the list without one of my favorites. This is maybe the track I've been playing the most in the past few years. It definitely manages to capture what techno used to be and what it is now ––soul and groove together.
