Music

MIXED BY Grown Folk

Analogue synths, white noise whispers, dusty grooves and pulpy drum machines.

Montreal has killer dance parties. At -24 degrees or whatever, partygoers are so psyched that they didn't die on the way to the rave that they can't help but slay the dancefloor with positive vibes. Also, nobody leaves until way past their bed time—you're gonna risk frostbite just to show up and dance for two songs? I don't think so.

The other thing I know about Montreal is that it houses a two-piece outfit called Grown Folk who are really good at making weird house music. I'm talking house music for art school kids with asymmetrical haircuts, cosmic house for considering the infinite, heavy house for you to dance the running man to. Their releases have graced imprints like SF's Icee Hot, Sydney's Templar Sound, and LA's Young Adults, and they recently laid a couple beats for another, equally unusual dynamic duo, Oakland rap mainstays Main Attraktionz. We asked them to flip us a mix and they came through with 55 minutes of relentless retofuturism—stacks of analogue synths, white noise whispers, dusty grooves and pulpy drum machines from 20 years ago. Grown Folk's Brendan and Drew tell us the mix includes some of their own originals and remixes alongside their favorite club tunes and a handful of records they picked up while in London recently. Vinyl, huh?
