This past Friday, tragedy struck the beloved DIY multi-disciplinary space Silent Barn in Bushwick, Brooklyn, which has been around for over a decade and is a widely celebrated mainstay of the local arts and music communities. During the first night of the planned three-day Freak Out Fest!—created to "celebrate queer & trans voices in punk music and its surrounding communities"—a fire broke out on the third floor of the building, in the apartment area. The fire reportedly destroyed the room where it began and caused serious damage to both the surrounding apartments and performance space downstairs. The Silent barn asserted in a statement that they believe an electrical malfunction started the fire.

While the building itself is insured, the cost of the residents' destroyed personal items is not. The Silent Barn's livelihood will also be seriously taxed by being unable to collect rent from these damaged apartments or from shows. For this reason, the collective is asking for donations in order to keep their space alive.

If you are able to spare anything, you can donate here and stay updated with the situation here.

Upcoming events at the Silent Barn included a Mister Saturday Night party slated for this coming Saturday. The status of the party or its relocation is unknown at this time.
