Flying Lotus, Skrillex, and Diplo Were Dance Music's Only VMA Winners

While electronic beats sounded many of the night's performances, the wins were slim.

Last night's MTV VMA awards were a typical cauldron of absurdity-mongering, with a night's worth of wow from Kanye West's lengthy ramble, some more music beef, and Justin Bieber breaking down in tears after playing his new trop-house sounding track that actually wasn't produced by Skrillex. Amongst all this stuff however, some artists actually won awards, and dance music's presence among the victors was felt, albeit subtly.

In the category of Best Cinematography, Flying Lotus took home the new Jeremy Scott-designed moonman for his collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, "Never Catch Me," that appeared on his 2014 album You're Dead!. Also nominated in the category (as well as visual effects) was FKA Twigs, for her "Two Weeks" video.

In the category of Best Visual Effects, Skrillex and Diplo's (Jack U) collaboration with Justin Bieber, "Where Are You Now," continued its high-profile success with a win, also being featured in the first half of Bieber's gravity-defying spectacle. The track was also nominated for Best Editing, losing to Beyoncé's "7/11," as well as Art Direction, losing to Snoop Dogg.

The Chemical Brothers, whose Michal Gondry directed video "Go," would fall short in the category of Art Direction, as well as Chet Faker's loss in the category of Best Choreography, rounded out a final tally of two wins, and seven loses for electronically-leaning artists at this year's event.
