Cavern of Anti-Matter's New Track Takes You into a Psychedelic Techno Wormhole

Berlin trio Cavern of Anti-Matter shared a follow-up their February LP Void Beats/Invocation Trex today with a sprawling new version of album cut "Hi-Hats Bring The Hiss." The band features two former members of the art pop band Stereolab, including founding member Tim Gane, so it should be no surprise that their playfully far-out sound exercise here carries a good deal of the psychedelic repetition that characterized that other group's work. Where that project was known for incorporating everything from lounge to free jazz, though, "Bring the Hiss (Version)" aims squarely for techno pleasure centers, ripping by at such a pace that it feels like it's deviously playing itself at the wrong speed.

The band gave THUMP some backstory for how the track came about via email. "'Bring The Hiss' was the original version of the LP cut and was written specifically for this EP," they said. "The sequencer riff, which is the heart of the track, was found accidentally after I turned my sequencer on after months of non-use and discovered this sound playing and I just recorded it as it was. The detuned sequencer really gives the track its edge and a somewhat ecstatic and hysterical feeling."

Earlier this year, Gane spoke to Noisey and explained that when it comes to music, it's sometimes better to leave the past behind and "start from scratch and learn a new language."

The track will appear on the inaugural EP from London/Berlin imprint Power Vacuum's sublabel Inversions, which also features tracks from Booze and Fupper. It will be released September 12 on 12" and digital formats.
