Ghostea Illuminates the West Coast Weirdo House Sound on a New Mix

Find out why Dirtybird, Perfect Driver, and This Ain't Bristol are all about this mysterious Californian artist.

Ghostea is a mysterious sort of guy. As a recent documentary outlines, he lives a quiet, mostly reclusive, slightly stoned life out in Big Sur and only ventures his way out of the tall trees for eccentric house raves up and down the west coast. His skills as both producer and DJ are undeniable, though, and as such he's racked up releases on Perfect Driver, This Ain't Bristol, and Dirtybird with very little fuss.

He's part of a whole generation of producers who, raised on Dirtybird and research chemicals, are always pushing to get weirder and more adventurous in their sounds. This mix features a number of his contemporaries—Botaz, Fritz Carlton, Lubelski—and is a perfect exercise in the type of grooving wonkiness they're known for dropping.

Ghostea's selection opens up boldly for a house mix with an original titled "Seaborg" that starts with the broken beat of an East Coast club track. With collab appearances from hotly tipped underground acts sitting alongside more established acts like Sonny Fodera and Emanuel Satie, this mix is an uptempo selection that manages to merge a knowledge of the old-school with an intrepid edge that keeps things interesting the whole way through.

Ghostea will follow up this mix with two releases in February, one on Nervous Records, and another on Laser Native.
