Kent Odessa's next album, Gender Studies, is a concept album that sees its narrator change sexes and perspectives from song to song. For the title track, it was only fitting that he pulled initial inspiration in one of music's most prolific gender benders, Prince, and his 1981 single, "Controversy."

However, what was originally supposed to be a guitar-driven track veered off course when the Detroit-born singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist found a new muse in musical hero, minimal techno flag-bearer Richie Hawtin, aka Plastikman. The result is a euphoria-inducing mesh of celestial vocal croons, hypnotic synth swirls, and atmospheric accents that, near the end of its seven-minute spell, crash fantastically together into white noise before easing away.

Listen to the track below ahead of Gender Studies's release on August 17 via Hidalgo Records.
