During Kesha's tumultuous court case with her producer Dr. Luke and her label Sony, the Russian-German EDM DJ Zedd tweeted at the pop singer expressing a desire to collaborate, and later brought the her onstage at Coachella. Now the two have released a proper studio recording, the first track since Kesha's legal battle.

On "True Colors," surrounded by a somber melody and rumbling tom-tom drums, Kesha pours her heart and voice into impassioned lyrics evoking the recent drama her career has been wrapped in: "A promise with a lie, is broken by design / What we thought we knew, has been swallowed by the truth." With the absence of drops and dance floor beats, "True Colors" is a missive of letting go and moving on.

Somewhat ironically, the track has the added twist of actually being approved by Dr. Luke himself. The New York Times reported that before announcing the new collaboration, Zedd tweeted, "Music can be freedom!" He added later, "Just to clarify: We didn't use any loopholes. Kemosabe/RCA gave us permission to release this song!" Dr. Luke responded on Twitter: "Thanks for the clarification @Zedd …"
