KYO's New Single "Data Carriers" Feels Like a Spring Thaw

Hannes Norrvide (of Lust for Youth) and Frederik Valentin's ambient project is back with a blissful new album, 'I Musik.'

Like a lot of their label-mates on Posh Isolation, KYO make music that can feel pretty grim. In the last year, the duo of Lust for Youth's Hannes Norrvide and Frederik Valentin has released several collections of classical-leaning ambience that tend toward overcast monochromes. The songs are moving yet austere washes of organic instrumentation, paired with deep synthetic drones. They could've continued down that route—there's endless possibility for detail in black-and-white—but their new single "Data Carriers" is something else entirely.

Taken from their forthcoming album I Musik, out March 24 on Posh Isolation, the two-minute track finds them working with more widescreen sounds. The dizzy synth drones remain, but voices and static fill the margins. Found samples and swooning vocal samples—whether they're real or synthesized is unclear—swell and swirl in complex florid arrangements. The piece swoons and kaleidoscopes, a sunburst of magic-hour colors and perfectly timed lens flares that feel flush with the sudden warmth of an unexpectedly temperate spring morning. It's been a long winter; open up your windows and let this one drift in.
