Leeds-based producer and DJ Laura Jones has had an celebrated career with releases on acclaimed labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Leftroom and Visionquest. Now Jones, who is diagnosed with the degenerative eye condition Stargardt's disease, has started her own label—Sensoramic.

"Sensoramic is inspired by the idea of losing one sense and expanding your others," said Jones in a released statement. "A panoramic stretching of the sensory boundaries." Stargardt's disease has no known cure, and Jones has just 30% of her visual field remaining. Jones told DJ Mag: "Despite living with the condition for the past eight years – I have been fortunate enough to be able to continue to DJ."

As a veteran of the scene, Jones has also stated that she was ready in her career to start a label: "After spending years devoted to digging through the back catalogues of other labels, it's a pleasure and a privilege to finally be able to unveil my own."

According to Resident Advisor, the first release on the vinyl-only label is house producer Karousel's Planetary Rebirth EP. Jones has already begun building an impressive line-up for the label, with releases planned from a clutch of talent, including the rising New York-based producer Kamran Sadeghi, and the German minimal techno wizard U-More, and more including Jones herself. The label's sleeves will be designed by noted Native American artist Sarah Sense.

As Jones's condition continues to affect her life, members of the DJ community has come forward to show their support, especially PBR Streetgang's Tom Thorpe, who is running today's London marathon on behalf of the research charity Fight for Sight. "Best of luck to Tom," said Jones. "I will be supporting you every step of the way."

You can spin a track from Karousel's Planetary Rebirth EP, which is out on May 3, over at Resident Advisor. You can also donate to Fight for Sight here and listen to a mix Thorpe made especially for the occasion below.
