Listen to Lotic's Insane New 30-Minute Track, "Agitations"

Or is it a mixtape? Either way it's a wild ride.

You may remember Lotic from that time he threw down with Mama Björk in an abandoned bank vault on Wall Street. Or maybe you've caught him working dark magic on the CDJs at one of his club nights with the Janus collective in Berlin, his adopted home. This week the Houston-born experimental producer released Agitations, his second all-original 30-minute mixtape, a follow-up to his insane Damsel In Distress mix from last winter.

Where the former mix was a collage of edits, remixes, and re-appropriated bits and pieces (with a tracklist that credits MikeQ, Missy Elliott, and "a shy Björk howling in the distance") Agitations is a half-hour of pure Lotic productions. It threads its way through hefty deconstructed club rhythms, evocative melodic moments, and the occasional flash of total chaos—always with a cinematic ear for atmosphere.

Lotic is well-known for his critical perspective on the electronic music world, and in a press release accompanying the release, said it was born from frustration with the scene's homogeneity:

"Agitations was born out of the frustrations that come with touring, playing mainly festivals in Europe (which are largely populated by straight white men with narrow views on music), and feeling increasingly out of touch with club culture and with the music industry in general. Each track was crafted as a mechanism to cope with the conflicted position of becoming increasingly successful in an otherwise alienating (and often unsafe) environment. Agitations is the rebuilding and reclamation of confidence. It's a reminder of ambition, a reminder that there is great strength in having the outsider's perspective."

Agitations is out now on the Janus label, and is available as a free download. Listen to it below.
