Man Power's Remix Of Atella's "Mechanical Sparrow" Is So Cold It Burns

The cosy original on Eskimo Recordings gets glacial.

Even though it's a Scandinavian country that stretches far into the arctic circle, with a climate that is the polar opposite of the warm and wispy Spanish islands that give Balearic music it's name, Norway has become a surprisingly reliable home for genre's breeziest tunes in recent years.

Bergen-based duo Atella is one of this new wave's best, but instead of calling them Balearic, maybe we should refer to these chilly strains with a name a little more geographically appropriate—koselig, maybe, which is loosely Norwegian for "cozy." Even if their newest remix is delivered by England-bred, Mexico-based producer Man Power, "Mechanical Sparrow (Man Power Remix)," upholds the dizzy slow burn associated with the genre's best. It evolves at a languid pace, gently expanding for three and a half of the track's eight minutes before letting the kick come in. Eventually, however, cascading analog synth lines and sliced vocals by folkster O. Martin offer up an energetic payoff. Listen here in advance of the February 12 release on Eskimo Recordings.
