Soda Plains is a wonderful example of somebody who can produce with brain-bending complexity and steer clear of disaffectedness, so we're always psyched to hear what he comes up with. A couple months ago it was the baroque club of "Traiana" (inspired by Vlach magic and the Roman empire), and now it's "Shuttered," something a bit slower and spaced-out than we're used to hearing from the Berlin/London-based producer, off his forthcoming Kickbacks EP.
Bringing to mind a little the "weightless" aesthetic as coined by UK experimentalists Mumdance, Logos, and co., the track is built around a melodically convulsive, chopped vocal sample, and grows around a solemn set of synth melodies into something quite beautiful. The producer gave THUMP some background for the track via email: "After the Black Ocean release, I started working at a slower tempo and tried to focus the palette based on recurring sounds and motifs," he explained. "One of the central ideas for the EP was corruption, and I wanted that to infiltrate the relationship between the sounds, to force conflicting things to inhabit the same system. 'Shuttered' takes its name from a concrete finish, often used in brutalist architecture."
