This Qgom Mix From Spoek Mathambo Is a Master Class in Your New Favorite Genre

Qgom tracks are usually low quality MP3s made by obscure artists, which is why this is such a gem.

If you only listen to music at 320kbps, close this tab and bugger off. This mix from Spoek Mathambo is about as raw as it gets. To accompany his documentary on South African electronic music, Future Sound of Mzansi (which we're premiering right here), Mathambo mixed just over 38 minutes of qgom's biggest bangers. Qgom, in case you're unfamiliar, is a fledgling subgenre of South African house coming straight out of Durban. Fittingly, the menacing, drum-heavy sound derives its name from the Zulu word for "bang" or "hit."

Qgom is rapidly gaining attention on this side of the world, with labels like London's Goon Club Allstars releasing an EP from the badass qgom trio Rudeboyz. Due partly to Durban's slow internet speeds, qgom tracks are usually low quality MP3s made by obscure artists, which is why this Mathambo master class is such a gem. This mix originally appeared on OkayAfrica, but has since been taken down; we're pleased to revive it here.

Check out the tracklist below—you'll recognize names like Rudeboyz and Jumping Back Slash from the Future Sound documentary.
