Why Be's New 'Famished' Mix Will Keep You Well-Fed in a World of Trash

The third entry in the series finds its home on Rabit's Halcyon Veil label.

Halcyon Veil, the label run by Houston producer Rabit, has been delivering a stream of stand-up mixes lately. It was just a couple weeks ago that we were gushing about their second mix, "LABARYNTH," by Philadelphia duo SCRAAATCH. That was preceded by the also-terrific inaugural entry from Rabit and NON RECORDS' Chino Amobi.

Today, we're thrilled to be premiering hvmix003, coming in the form of "famished 003" from Copenhagen producer Why Be (Tobias Lee), who released his first proper EP Snipestreet on the label earlier this year.

Considering how hard to place Tobias Lee's tracks usually are—they're messed-up, like they tried performing surgery on themselves and failed—it's really fun to hear him do mixes, because you're always surprised by the connections he draws between disparate sounds. Here, that means starting off with a classical guitar solo from Yes, soon bringing in a Dutch bubbling track and detouring into a Radiohead blend with Swedish upstart Toxe. It ends up delightfully making sense in all the wrong ways.

Lee gave THUMP some background for the mix via email: "'Famished' was born when Radar Radio asked me if I wanted a regular slot earlier this spring," he explained. "I pretty quickly dropped the initial idea of half-assing my way through it and it grew quite ambitious quickly. I made all the artwork, and the name was a given since I (due to a series of bad decisions) was actually starving while making the first show. 'Famished' is also about staying well fed in a world of trash, and the GYBE! album title Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven sums up a lot of the ideas behind it pretty well, too."
